This is how we do it.

This beautiful home in Southeast Alaska is only 12-14 years old and the log oil is failing and peeling. The logs will continue to darken, dry out and crack if not treated. We take it a step further: strip all the oil, bringing the logs back to “like new”, then stain and seal using long lasting water-based products.
Let the refinish commence!

See the tops of the logs?

Dust collects on the sticky oil over the years and the sun and elements break down the finish, exposing the bare wood to UV darkening. The logs eventually start splitting making the re-sealing less effective. And down here in the rainy Southeast Alaska, mold also starts to grow.

Mold, dust, deterioration, splitting

Luckily, we have the cure.

We got the Sanders! Strip it down, leave no Oil!

Then buff those logs to a high shine.
Check out that grain.

That stain is so pretty

Water-based stains withstand the sun and elements much longer than any oil stains. This one, manufactured by Permachink Co. really shows off the natural log grain.

Every log has character

After going over the logs for weeks, first with sanders, then buffers, vacuums.. Tape, plastic, stain, top coat.. Finally, adding the touches with a hand troweled chink finish between each log. Which one is your favorite?
